What You Should Know About Plant-Based Mattresses

Technology continues to give us something new every year. The development of synthetic foams made of petroleum-based polyurethane materials gives way to the creation of many convenient household equipment and furniture.

One of the many pieces of furniture that make use of the petroleum-based polyurethane material is the memory foam mattress. Before the memory foam mattress, people used the common spring-type mattresses and it wasn’t easy to find the perfect extra firm mattress. However, the spring-type mattress has failed to provide the same level of comfort which the memory foam mattress is famous for.

The Conventional Memory Foam

The memory foam originally used petroleum-based polyurethane material, an idea inspired by the researches of NASA. This foam is sensitive to temperature. It hardens on cold temperature but softens on warmer temperatures. The foam evenly spreads the weight of the sleeper and contours itself according to the user’s body form.

Though better than the spring-type mattress, there are still some issues about the memory foam.

The Plant-based Memory Foam

Some of the issues presented by the use of memory foam are heat retention, bad odor, and erratic firmness. Luckily, all of these are addressed by plant-based memory foams.

The plant-based memory foam utilizes oils obtained from plants as a replacement for one of the components of the petroleum product. This discovery allows the foam to have better breathability. At the same time, it gets rid of the other issues like heat retention and odor.

Plants like soy beans, castor beans, coconut, and peanuts are just some of the examples where the oil that is processed to produce a more “eco-friendly” product. For conventional polyurethane foams, the molecules used to create foam came from petroleum. Now, natural plant oils reduce the by-products of petroleum, making the foam more environment-friendly.

Final Thoughts

Mattresses continue to evolve in order to address the sleeping needs of people. The use of plant-based materials to create a foam, for example, has been proven to be beneficial not only to the environment but also to the health of the people. Though plant-based memory foam is more expensive than the conventional memory foam, it gives more and healthier benefits.
